Vascular & Interventional Cardiology

About VAIC

Vascular and Interventional Cardiology (VAIC) is a full-service medical practice located in Northern Virginia that provides cardiac and vascular care to the people of Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Maryland and even to people from other States and other countries. Since its inception in 2003, we have taken care of thousand of patients and their families. Initially we were in Falls Church and just recently moved to Fairfax, close to Inova Fairfax Hospital. Our focus has been individualized, focused care and each patient gets full care without regards to their insurance or other factors. Unlike many large practices that work corporate style, each patient at our facility is seen by a physician and not any nurse practioner or medical assistant. Our patients come back to us year after year because of this specialized care. Most of the time we see new patients within a week if not the same day of their call, and they don’t have to wait for long periods to see their physician. Our goal is old style personalized care.
VAIC provides all outpatient non-invasive testing at our office and patient doesn’t have to go to different offices and centers. We provide Echocardiography, Stress Testing, Carotid and Vascular Ultrasound, EKG and heart monitoring --- all done at our premise and reviewed by our own physician.
Our physician is affiliated to all local area hospitals including Inova Fairfax Hospital and George Washington University Hospital where he performs high risk coronary angioplasty and stenting, carotid artery stenting, peripheral vascular disease intervention. Our physician has performed more than thousands of these procedures over the last 20 years and we get many patients from out of state for high risk cardiac procedures. Specially in patients that cannot undergo open heart bypass surgery or do not want to have bypass surgery, our physician can perform multivessel coronary stenting.

                                        Our Services

We provide complete services related to heart and vascular matters, including:

Cardiac Consultation

This is the most important part of your visit. During this time, you will have the opportunity to explain your complaints and issues to the doctor. He will go over in detail about your complaints, medical history, medications and will review all your medical records. He will then examine you and go over the plan to resolve your issues.

Electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG)

Records the electrical activity of the heart to check for heart abnormalities. Multiple leads are placed on the body and the electrical activity is recorded in the form of waves. These wave forms are interpreted by your physician.

High Blood Pressure Assessment and Management

Blood Pressure (Hypertension) is called the silent killer. In most patients it doesn’t causes any pain or discomfort, but it can cause damage to the eyes, heart, kidney and brain and even result in stroke. It is therefore very important to seek medical help if you have any elevation in your blood pressure and let your doctor decide if you need medications to control it.

Echocardiogram

An ultrasound test of the heart which helps the doctor to assess the functions and abnormalities of the heart valves and muscles. Video pictures of the heart are taken during this test to look at the size and shape of the heart.

Carotid Ultrasound

Is done to assess the carotid arteries which supply blood to the brain. Carotid ultrasound checks for narrowed or blocked arteries that can increase the risk of stroke. Depending on the ultrasound, our doctor may decide to do Carotid angiography and possible stenting.

Vascular Ultrasound (Peripheral artery Ultrasounds)

Peripheral Arterial Ultrasound is done to assess for blockages in your leg arteries. You may require this study if you have leg pain or claudication or if you are at high risk for peripheral vascular disease.

Abdominal Ultrasound

Abdominal Ultrasound is done to assess for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). You need to be screened for AAA if you have --high blood pressure, history of smoking, family history of abdominal aneurysm and if you are above 55 years of age.

Nuclear Stress Test

A specialized test to assess how well the heart functions under physical activity/stress. During this test, an IV is placed in the arm for injection of medication and isotope. Resting and stress images of the heart are taken and compared to see if there are any complications with blood flow to the heart. For patients who are unable to walk on treadmill, a medicine can be given that increases the blood flow to the heart, mimicking the effects of exercise. This test is used to diagnose, Coronary Artery disease,Arrhythmias and to see how well the treatment is working. Requires placements of leads (similar to EKG leads) to your chest and a small pocket size device that is hooked to your belt and continuously records your heart rhythm for many days. Upon abnormal activity detection by EKG analysis algorithm, the recorded cardiac activity is automatically sent to the server and reviewed. Upon completion of the study, your physician will discuss the results with you and give any follow up advice.

24- hour Holter-monitor

A device used to record heart rhythm for 24 to 48 hours. It gives insight to your doctor regarding abnormal electrical activity of the heart.

Cardiac monitoring (Tele-monitoring)

Requires placements of leads (similar to EKG leads) to your chest and a small pocket size device that is hooked to your belt and continuously records your heart rhythm for many days. Upon abnormal activity detection by EKG analysis algorithm, the recorded cardiac activity is automatically sent to the server and reviewed. Upon completion of the study, your physician will discuss the results with you and give any follow up advice.

Cardiac Catheterization/Angioplasty/Stenting

Coronary Angiography or Cardiac Catheterization is a procedure where contrast dye is injected, and which can reveal if you have any blockages in the coronary arteries that supply blood to the muscles of the heart. This procedure is done at the hospital. Following this procedure and if you are found to have blockages, you may need to have balloon angioplasty followed by placement of stent.

Carotid Artery Stenting

Carotid Artery- the artery on both sides of the neck supply blood to the brain and therefore are very important.Just like in your heart arteries, there can be build up of fat and cholesterol in the walls of the arteries causing carotid artery disease and narrowing. These can be seen with a simple non-invasive ultrasound test done at our office. Narrowing of the carotid arteries can result in stroke when a small plaque can dislodge and then get lodged in the smaller arteries of the brain causing occlusion and no blood flow to that part of the brain. In the past, patients who had significant blockage were treated with a surgical procedure called—Carotid Endarterectomy. Now alternatively, these can be treated without surgery and without need of anesthesia by Carotid Stenting. Dr Shahab is one of few physicians in the country who introduced this procedure in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. Nowthis procedure is widely available and is accepted as a standard form of treatment. Dr Shahab is a pioneer in this field and has written several papers and presented his research at many major national meetings.

Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS)

Provides a cross-sectional view of an artery from the inside out. It allows our doctor to look at the arteries from the inside and helps to better assess the buildup of plaques and blockages. This tool can help in selecting appropriate size stent and to confirm that stent is fully expanded and well opposed to the wall of the artery. Using this technology helps ensure long term patency of the stents.

"I was experiencing unusually low energy so my Internist gave me a referral to Dr Shahab. Dr Shahab tested me and found coronary artery disease and we scheduled an angioplasty with stent. The improvement was immediate. Two additional procedures added three more stents. I have no physical restrictions and lead an active life at age 77."
